The objects of the Highland Society of London, which was instituted in 1778 and incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1816, include ‘preserving the Martial Spirit, Language, Dress, Music and Antiquities of the Ancient Caledonians’ and ‘promoting the Improvement and general Welfare of the Northern parts of the Kingdom’. H.M. The Queen is Chief of the Society.
Highland Society of London Prizes are presented each year at the major Piping Competitions – the Argyllshire Gathering at Oban, the Northern Meeting at Inverness, the Glenfiddich at Blair Castle and the London Piping Society. In addition a Prize for a work by a Highland artist is presented each year at the Royal Scottish Academy Summer Exhibition and, for many years, donations have been made to the National Piping Centre in Glasgow.
The Society was registered as a Charity in 1985.
